Extension in civil service retirement age mulled

The Civil Service Commission and the Finance Ministry are jointly studying the possibility in extending the retirement age of some civil servants to 65-70 years.

Nontikorn Kanjanajitra, the secretary-general of the Office of the Civil Service Commission, said on Thursday that this would help save the government's spending on retirement entitlements.
The office's data showed that in 2014 fiscal year, from total central budget of Bt345.5 billion, more than one third or Bt132.3 billion is earmarked for pension payments.
"The extension would be applied with some civil servants in some areas in high demand. This is to address the shortage of expertise in some areas. Earlier, this is is applied with civil servants in the medical and legal fields," he said.
The office is also moving forward to extend the universal retirement age from 60 to 65 or 70 years, given longer longevity of Thais.
