Government wants total control

Government wants total control

Re: "Pressure mounts on court as govt pushes charter change", October 1.

I was flabbergasted by Deputy Prime Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana saying the Constitutional Court had no jurisdiction to rule on the passage of constitutional amendments.

If that is the case, why do we have the court in the first place?
I understand Phonthep has a lot of accomplishments and credentials: He is a former lawyer and judge, as well as the richest minister in the Cabinet, with Bt2.9 billion to his name. However, that doesn’t make him the supreme judgement-maker in everything.
Thai MPs are trying to control the checking power of the Senate by changing the Constitution to suit their purpose, as simple as that. And that may constitute as an act against the philosophy of the present Constitution!
