Two Laotians get death for murder

A Vientiane court sentenced two men to death on Tuesday for murdering a Chinese businessman last October. The suspects were also charged with stealing money and valuables from the victim, while a third defendant was given 10 years in prison for aiding and

The men sentenced to death were Phonsy, 33, and Phetlamphon, 25, both known only by one name.
During police interrogation, Phonsy admitted that he and Phetsamay plotted to rob the tyre shop where the latter used to work. They were joined by a man named Dokkeo and headed for the shop armed with hammers, a taser gun and some tape.
The plan was to have Phonsy create a distraction, while the other two caught the owner unawares and tied him down. However, when things started going wrong, Phonsy hit the victim on the head, killing him instantly. The killers then fled with the money and the safe and took refuge in the provinces. They were finally apprehended on October 27, but a fourth accomplice, Phetsamay, managed to escape on May 19 and is still at large.
Police said the attackers stole more than 600 million kip (Bt2.3 million), Bt410,000 and about US$40,000 (Bt1.24 million) in cash.
