Six global firms team up to offer 'emerging talent' programme

HEIDRICK & STRUGGLES International, a professional-services firm, has partnered with five other international companies to launch an Emerging Talent Alliance Programme (ETAP) in Thailand.

The programme is aimed at providing local high-potential employees with more exposure to dynamic work experience.
The ETAP is to kick off today, Heidrick & Struggles said. Conceptualised by General Motors (Chevrolet), the innovative talent-exchange programme is being facilitated by Heidrick & Struggles, and supported by the senior business leaders of like-minded companies, namely BlueScope Steel, Dusit International, Maersk Line and McDonald’s.
The five companies have jointly launched the one-year programme to offer their core expertise to emerging talent, with the objective of providing promising staff with a development opportunity through cross-functional training.
Ten up-and-coming middle and senior management employees have been selected out of 17,700 people at the five alliance companies.
The programme is divided into three parts – candidate identification, quarterly training sessions and final presentations. In the final phase, all participants will share their key learning and experience from the programme at an executive briefing event.
“I am very excited that we have taken an active role in driving this emerging-talent development programme in the market,” said Steve Mullinjer, Asia-Pacific regional leader for Heidrick & Struggles.
“In the Global Talent Index study in 2011, jointly published by Heidrick & Struggles and the Economist Intelligence Unit, Thailand outperformed other adjacent countries like Vietnam and Indonesia in terms of the talent environment as well as companies’ overall ability to attract and retain the people they need.
“I believe a programme like Emerging Talent Alliance Programme will be instrumental in improving the overall competitiveness of Thai executives, especially in light of the formation of the Asean Economic Community.”
David Shackleton, chief operating officer of Dusit International, said: “At Dusit International one of our key priorities is talent development for our growing portfolio.
“The ETAP programme will provide a great opportunity for our top talent to learn from other successful companies’ best practices, as well as provide them with a range of development opportunities, experiences and situations that will groom them to become seasoned hospitality professionals.”
From now till November 7, each company will offer one-week on-the-job training sessions for the participants to develop the skills they need to improve or lead change in a variety of functions, such as structured problem-solving, teamwork and creativity skills.
The programme will also offer senior executive coaching sessions, a variety of functional exposure, project-focused work, job shadowing and practical training sessions.
“I am very proud to be part of ETAP, bringing best-in-class corporations together to discuss talent-related issues as well as gathering thoughts on meaningful ways to shape high-potential talent to become tomorrow’s business leaders in this emerging market,” said Jeff Stryker, principal in charge of Heidrick & Struggles Thailand.
“With the alliance companies’ valuable contribution to ETAP, the participants will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain exposure to different business settings. They are encouraged to transfer their new knowledge and skills to their current role and influence their co-workers, ultimately making a positive impact on their respective organisation.”
The alliance think-tank brought together 20 leaders from various departments including human resources, operations, sales, quality and health safety, and environment to formulate a multifaceted one-year programme.
Participants can gain exposure to different business settings and learn new skills, ranging from lean production, contractor management, incident investigation and management, and hotel operations and planning to supply-chain management and customer satisfaction.
