Value of cross-border trade with Thailand grows by $141m

Myanmar has earned US$352 million (Bt10.9 billion) from cross-border trade with Thailand from October 11 to April 1 in this fiscal year (2013-14), according to official data.

Recent data from the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs shows cross-border trade is $141-million up on last year.
In the same period of the last fiscal year, cross-border trade earned just over $211, which was also up on the previous year.
Official cross-border trade with Thailand took place through the official border trade centres such as Tarcheleik, Myawady, Kawthaung, Myeik, Nabulel, Hteekee and Mawtaung.
Myanmar has more croos-border trade centres with Thailand compared to only four with China, including Muse, Loijai, Kanpeiktee and Chin Shwehaw. However, Myanmar’s cross-border trade volume with China is higher than that with Thailand despite the fewer number of trade centres.
The country’s trade volume with other countries is expected to reach over $25 billion in this fiscal year.
Authorities are also taking tough measures against illegal trade in order to increase the official border trade volume.
