Belgian concert to mark relations anniversaries

Belgian composer, countertenor vocalist, pianist, guitarist and musicologist Wim Mertens will perform a concert in Bangkok on October 31, to mark the key anniversaries of Thai-Belgian relations.

This year marks the 145th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship and the 130th year of Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the Kingdom of Belgium. Hosted by the Embassy of Belgium, the concert will take place at the Music Hall, Art and Culture Building, Chulalongkorn University.
Wim Mertens started composing music in 1980, the Embassy said in a statement. Since then, Mertens is known as an international recording and performing artist who has given several concerts, as a solist and with his ensemble all over Europe, in North and Central America, Japan and in Russia.
Mertens not only plays the piano, he also plays the classical guitar and he sings with a characteristically highpitched voice, using a carefully crafted personal language.
More than 50 albums were already released by this artist, with the famous songs Struggle for pleasure, Close Cover, 4 mains, Their duet and Maximizing the Audience as a few of his many popular and top hits.
Wim Mertens knows how to please his public, from mainstream music listeners to more serious music aficionados, by using mesmerising minimalist techniques with a romantic twist.
