Windsurfers scoop medals in Singapore

Thai windsurfers returned from the Singapore Open Asian Windsurfing Championship laden with medals, with the Olympian Ek Boonsawad capturing the RSX crown.

Upcoming Thai stars Duangkamon Phongern and Thanatip Suebyubon also qualified for this year’s Nanjing Youth Olympics, which will run from August 16 to 28.
Duangkamon, who claimed a gold medal at last year’s SEA Games in Myanmar, was tagged by the International Sailing Federation as the undisputed champion of the Techno 293 Youth Girls division, winning seven races and finishing a full 10 points ahead of her closest rival in tricky conditions.
Hong Kong’s sailors took all three podium places in the Youth Boy’s division, but as Hong Kong had already qualified for Nanjing, Thanatip’s fifth place earned another berth for Thailand.
Sunday’s finale of the five-day event at Singapore’s National Sailing Centre also saw Ruamsap Phanuthat lose the tie-breaker to Sri Lanka’s Chameera Gunawardena in the RS One Class, which came down to a decision based on discards. Chinain Pattharadnai earned a second silver for Thailand in the RSX Youth Boys division.
