Water festival leaves 91 dead

Ninety-one people were killed and 758 sustained injuries due to road accidents and crimes during the Thingya Water Festival, according to the Myanmar Police Force.

The festival period recorded some 333 road accidents, 33 murders and 13 rape cases across the country.
MPF Pol Lt-Colonel Win Sein told The Daily Eleven that the number of nationwide crimes reached 836 cases in the four-day period. He added that some crimes were related to the festival and some were not related to the festivities.
“During this Thingyan, there were 17 more crimes and eight injuries relating to the festival compared with the figures of last year. But the number of deaths decreased by 17.
Our police force beefed up security for this festival. So some types of crime went down. More road accidents occurred due to the increased number of vehicles than those of previous years,” said Win Sein.
