Cure for degeneracy is good people, unity

Cure for degeneracy is good people, unity

Re: "We are degenerating just like Venice did in the 18th century", Tell It As It Is, May 1.

Pornpimol Kanchanalak’s column on the moral decline of your beautiful country is right on the mark. When you have over 600,000 people involved in the sex trade industry, bringing in over US$2 billion – with local officials, politicians, organised crime, etc, also squeezing these people for a share – and this is tolerated, you have a major problem. When you have politicians who are politicians for no other reason than to better themselves financially, you have a major problem. When you have good people who are afraid to speak out about the atrocities they witness in their everyday lives, you have a major problem. When children have no chance in life from birth, suspicious deaths are reported as heart attacks and just swept under the rug, when the gap between the haves and have-nots widens each year, and the only way to get ahead is to get out of the country, you have a major problem.
Thais need to create an under-swell of people who together can build pride back into a country so it becomes a nation all will be happy and secure to call their own. It will take time, and the efforts of people who care about their home as a whole, as a place not just for themselves but for everyone. The Mighty Dollar cannot be allowed to continue dictating this “anything-goes” culture, as it has done for the past 40-50 years.
