Govt borrows US$300m to upgrade Mon-Taninthayi road

The Ministry of Construction has borrowed US$300 million from the Exim Bank of China to upgrade the Mon-Taninthayi road, sources from the ministry said.

The ministry plans to upgrade parts of north-south highway connecting Mon State and Taninthayi Region.
"We have $300 million to spend for the whole country but we are now analysing to upgrade part of Mon-Taninthayi road," said Chief Engineer Khin Maung Kyaw from the ministry of construction.
The discussion over interest rates on the loan is still ongoing and the ministry of construction requested Exim Bank to set two kinds of interest rates.
"We asked for the interest rate of 4.5 per cent for the first US$150 million and 2 per cent for the rest. This is still under negotiation," Khin Maung Kyaw continued.
The Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development will handle the loan and the Ministry of Construction will submit for the budget required to upgrade the road.
According to a government release in March, over US$9 billion has been borrowed from 19 organisations and various countries. Myanmar borrowed more than US$4 billion from China.
