Enlightened Kiradech to lead local charge

USPGA Championship winner Jason Dufner, former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and reigning Asian No 1 Kiradech Aphibarnrat provide the star dust for the US$750,000 tournament being held from July 3-6.
Reigning champion Scott Hend of Australia and South Korean star KT Kim, a multiple winner in Japan, have also confirmed their participation.
Schwartzel, holder of 12 international victories, is relishing a return to the Land of Smiles after his victory in the 2012 Thailand Golf Championship.
“I am looking forward to my first appearance at the Chiangmai Golf Classic. I’ve enjoyed some success in Thailand in the past and it would be fantastic if I can produce my best golf once again to secure my second victory in a country which I truly enjoy visiting.”
Kiradech, who recently spent time in retreat at a Buddhist monastery, said the experience had helped strengthen his game. “It was good for my mind and I can apply some of the knowledge gained there to playing golf,” said the long-hitting golfer, who grew up idolising countryman Thongchai Jaidee.
“Chiang Mai is known for fine weather and great atmosphere and I am eager to play there. I played pretty well in the inaugural tournament and I hope to put on another good show. The Alpine course suits my eye and style of play, so hopefully, I will have another chance to win in July,” said Kiradech, who finished fourth in the Indonesian Masters recently.
“My being the No 1 in Asian has open the doors for many golf tournaments all over the world. I had a slow start to the year and I feel that my game is coming back to its best and hopefully I can secure my first Asian Tour victory in Thailand.”
The powerful Hend is looking forward to defending his title against a strong field. “I enjoyed winning the event last year after shooting a final round 64. I will take those good memories with me this time out,” the Aussie said.
Former tennis world No 9 Paradorn Srichaphan will be playing the tournament on a sponsors’ exemption and is hoping to begin another successful chapter in his sporting career. “I thought the best way to develop my golf is to play tournaments. … My goal is to put on a good show rather than make the cut,” said Paradorn.
Asian Tour chairman Kyi Hla Han said Thailand should be proud that 24 entrants in the top-class field of 60 are home-grown players. “With so many good players coming up, the future is bright for the country,” he said.
The Chiangmai Golf Classic would be televised live in 180 countries, he added.
