IP Dept launches project to make 3 product categories more marketable

HAND-WOVEN FABRICS, baskets, and Thai desserts are highlighted as the priority products of a new project of the Intellectual Property Department.

Designed to enhance the value of local products, the project, launched yesterday, is concurrently aimed at raising awareness on intellectual-property rights (IPR) and supporting exports.
Deputy director-general Kulanee Isadisai said the department would focus on these three products as many local communities have expertise in such goods.
The agency will encourage local producers to develop quality, packaging, and marketing strategies to help them penetrate overseas markets under global liberalisation.
Primarily, the department will encourage enterprises to produce new designs and packages for at least 45 samples. Marketing strategies for each would be conceived.
Kulanee said that to increase IPR awareness, makers of a new product would be encouraged to register their patent, copyright, trademark, and brand. To increase sales, each product should have its own brand story to tell consumers, and have a unique design and packaging.
The department will also help enterprises set up pop-up shops (short-term outlets) at department stores so that people will recognise local products more.
Under the project, officials will be sent to communities to educate local producers. The first mission will be in Phanat Nikhom district, Chon Buri province.
