Sisters do it backwards

Sisters do it backwards

The Thai siblings behind fashion brand Sretsis launch their new autumn-winter collection from their new store at Central Embassy

Leading Thai fashion brand Sretsis bookmarked another important chapter in its growth with the recent opening of a store at Central Embassy that’s designed to resemble a dignified library yet sings every line of the label’s signature sense of adventure and subtle humour.
Playful details dot the wooden walls of the second-floor boutique as customers are invited to squeeze their way past the gigantic fairy tale book sofa and enter a secret chamber housing the clothes. The d?cor, the brainchild of sisters Kly, Pim and Matina Sukhahuta, offers the perfect backdrop to the brand’s latest collection, which has been dubbed “The Curious Club of Gentlewomen”.
The autumn-winter 2014 collection, says Pim, brings together various moods of the carnation flower in manipulated forms from ruffles, border trimmings to full blooms.
“Our classic tailored tuxedo, biker jacket and suit looks much softer and sweet with the Carnation ruffles motif,” she says.
“The charmingly outdated flower symbolically represents the female unity of the club’s members and their forbears.”
The new collection is divided into four sections. The “Curious club mood” highlights varsity cheerleader meets classic gentlemen’s club through understated, crisp collars and cuffs as well as mixed classic foulard prints with tiny foxes. Classic tuxedos with genuine leather lapels come in both male and female silhouettes with clips as adornments while the “S” Varsity and “Revolution” motifs on casual knits call for gender and political revolutions.
“Rebel Gentlemen”, a curious gentlewomen take on a masculine look with a definite feminine touch, features faux fur with leather trimming and a biker jacket worn with a silk carnation ruffled tux shirt. The Tavern too gives off a boyish feel with the Beatrix hourglass suit jacket contrasting with the Barnaby masculine blazer.
“Classic Gentlewomen Club’s Attire” meanwhile is soft and gentle, reserved for days that demand an ultra feminine touch but with menswear fabric details. Tailored pants in feminine colours offset ruffled shirtdresses in floaty silk, fox lame and organza. Gigantic pearl cufflinks, shirt bibs, large buttons and draped collars display ongoing gender fluidity.
“A Gala at the Club” sends out a signal to all members to come in full bloom. Carnations blossom like acknowledged female power in white, pink and blue. Carnation hand appliques decorate silk organza and velvet ribbons while the Poet Ruffle cardigan is dressed with Sretsis gold-rimmed buttons.
The new store also hides a secret door to the world of Matina Amanita, the jewellery brand founded by the youngest sister. Around since 2005, Matina Amanita has now repositioned itself as a fine jewellery brand and for this season is introducing “Love Tokens” and “The Engagement” collections, which include “Precious Find” special jewellery selections handpicked by Matina.
The new store, she notes, comes complete with a specially commissioned wallpaper design from illustrator Terawat Teankaprasith. It invites shoppers to become lost in the Blue Forest where they can peer into hollowed-out tree branches at the latest Matina Amanita creations. Stars adorn ceilings and carpets, constructing an alternate world where an owl cave serves as a secret passage to the world of Sretsis.
“I believe that Matina Amanita ladies might want something fun and lively to wear on their special days rather than the traditional rings. One particular ring is specially designed for one particular bride, and it will never be repeated. It can be passed on as an invaluable heirloom, representing an unbreakable bond from one generation to next,” says Matina of her “Engagement” collection.
“We do custom made, so customers can bring their own gems too.”
The “Baby Love Tokens” come in manipulated 24k gold and are based on zodiac signs. Names and birthdates can be specially engraved.
