Satellite TV: why should we pay twice?

Satellite TV: why should we pay twice?

If you have noticed that Thai satellite television is showing more commercials lately, interrupting programmes to air paid advertising, and that most if not all programmes are starting later and later, with more and more repeats, you are not alone.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has allowed TrueVisions to show six minutes of paid commercials an hour. But in reality, up to 10 minutes of advertising per hour is being shown, in blatant violation of the ruling by NBTC.
One wise contributor to the letters column of a newspaper recently wrote that the satellite-TV monopoly, in buying one of the lowest-priced-tier packages from its providers and charging very high subscription fees, is the biggest rip-off in Thailand today.
A TV company should not be allowed to show so many commercials per hour. Even better, it should be barred from showing any at all, given the income derived from both subscribers and ads in its monthly magazine. Subscribers should not have to pay to watch ads.
And, if you want to phone NBTC on #1200 and/or True Visions at (02) 725 7575 to complain about commercials on television and exorbitant subscription fees, and ask for better-quality tiered programming, you would not be alone in this either.
