Myanmar NGOs to give legal protection to suspects in Thai murder case

Legal protection will be provided for Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun, the two Myanmar migrants who are accused in Thailand on four counts, including murder, according to the executive director of an education and development foundation based in southern Thailan

Htoo Chit told a press conference on Tuesday that workers’ rights non-government organisations in Myanmar would protect the two suspects because they (NGOs) believed that they were not the main culprits in the Koh Tao murder case.
The press conference was held in Yangon by the NGOs that are helping the suspects’ parents to see their sons in the southern Thai province of Surat Thani, where they are under arrest in connection with the murders (of two Britons on September 15).
“After visiting Thailand to investigate the case, we can tell you clearly that the two young men are not the killers. We can even say that they are not guilty as accused. What I am trying to point out is that it doesn’t matter how they confessed, we are sure that they weren’t involved in the killings as the main players. Also, we will be protecting them as they are Myanmar citizens,” Htoo Chit told the press.
The NGOs will take the parents of the two suspects to Thailand. They are now working together with the Myanmar ambassador to Thailand to get them Myanmar passports, as well as entry visas for Thailand.
The organisations will also arrange security for the parents while visiting Thailand.
Tun Tun Htaik, the father of Win Zaw Htun, said: “My son isn’t an aggressive person. He has good morality as far as I know. He wouldn’t commit such violence. In addition, the body structure of the British guy was bigger than my son’s. I know my son behaves well.
The case against Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun was due to go to trial today, but the matter was turned down and postponed by a Thai judge due to a lack of information.
