CK Power looking at many locations for new solar farms

CK Power has considered several locations for solar farms and has been approached by some parties for joint development of biomass power plants.

Piyanut Marittanaphorn, managing director of finance and accounting for CKP, said yesterday that the new solar farms would not use the Bt3-billion capital expenditure budget for 2015-17 already earmarked for Phase 2 of the co-generation power plant in the Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate and the planned Nam Bak hydropower plant in Laos.
If it does invest in the new renewable-energy power plants, it still has more borrowing capacity.
The 120-megawatt Bang Pa-in co-generation project is expected to cost Bt5 billion. The construction contract has been awarded to CKP’s major shareholder and founder Ch Karnchang and the contract is expected to be signed this year.
Construction is slated to commence early next year. The project will start feeding power to the grid in the middle of 2017.

Nam Bak plant
The Nam Bak plant will have the capacity of 160MW. The signing of its concession and power-purchasing contract was postponed to early next year from the end of this year, but this will not affect the company’s overall capex plan, Piyanut said.
The company has maintained its revenue-growth target for this year at 30 per cent to Bt7 billion, she said.
CKP is a holding company for businesses distributing electricity generated from various sources. It has stakes in five plants fuelled by three sources of energy.
SouthEast Asia Energy is the major shareholder of Nam Ngum 2 Power Co, the operator of a hydroelectric power plant.
Bangpa-in Cogeneration operates a co-generation power plant.
Three companies run solar power plants – Bangkhenchai Co, Nakhon Ratchasima Solar Co and Chiangrai Solar Co.
