Thailand already in the medals as Beach Games opens

After a superb performance by women's ju-jitsu duo Suphawadee Kaeosrasaen and Kunsatri Kumsroi handed Thailand its first gold, the host nation quickly moved to second in the medal standings ahead of the opening ceremony of the 4th Asian Beach Games yeste

The Thailand camp came to life when Suphawadee and Kunsatri edged Pakistan’s Sundus Salem Khan and Maryam 36-35 in the final, before the mood was boosted by a second gold from mixed duo Areewan Chansri and Ratcharat Yimprai after they conquered Pakistan’s Muhammad Ammar and Sundud Salem Khan 39-34. Thailand emerged from the ju-jitsu competition with two gold, two silver and five bronze medals in the martial art.
The gold rush continued into yesterday when Thailand won their first-ever title in the beach flag football competition, crushing Kuwait 58-39 in the final. 
Thai athletes’ second gold of the day and fourth overall came in the men’s fairway woodball where Peera Chaisongkram edged Siraphop Wannapin 3-2 in an all-Thai showdown.
Indonesian Tiga Putri Dwi smashed Thai dreams of a clean sweep in woodball when she stunned Siripat Karinit 3-2 in the women’s fairway final.
Thailand sit second in the medals table with four gold, four silver and six bronze medals. Leading the charge are Mongolia with six golds and two bronze, followed by the UAE with four gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Defending overall champions China are trailing in 16th place with only one bronze.
Last night’s opening ceremony saw Games volleyball champions Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee ignite the Games Flame at the Saphan Hin Sports Centre in Phuket.
The gold-medal hunt kicks off in earnest today, with triathlon, marathon swimming, Kurash, beach wrestling, foot volley and sport climbing holding the promise of more success for the hosts.
