Third overpass with escalators to open soon

Third overpass with escalators to open soon

Yangon's third overpass fitted with escalators is set to open soon in front of the Ga Mone Pwint department store on Kabaraye Pagoda Road, according to the Roads and Bridges Department, Yangon City Development Committee.

The area around the overpass is crowded, as it is located near Kabaraye Pagoda and a bus-stop. The overpass is expected to ease traffic congestion.
Two escalators will take pedestrians to the top of the overpass, along with normal stairways. The overpass is 100 feet long, 11 feet wide and has a clearance of 16 feet above the ground. Construction on the overpass began in June 2014.
“The bridge will be commissioned into service in a few days; the exact date has yet to be announced, though,” said an official of the department.
The overpass will be open from 6am to 9pm. The cost of the overpass was not announced.
Two escalator-attached overpasses – one near Aung San Thuriya Hla Thaung School in Mingalardon and another on Strand Road – were opened in 2014. Other overpass projects have been planned that never materialised.
A new overpass on Lanthit Street in Lanmadaw Township is now under construction. Six overpasses have been slated for construction in the next fiscal year, some of which will have escalators. The expected total budget for the overpasses is Ks 1.5 billion (US$1.5 million).
Meanwhile, Yangon nearly completes the construction of an overpass at the junction between Myaynigone and Shinsaw Pu roads.
The overpass is 78 per cent complete, according to Thet Lin, a project manager for Capital Development Co.
“At present, the construction tasks are nearly finished by 78 per cent. We are trying to complete the bridge by the end of March. Really, the bridge was planned for completion by May 6, but the Yangon regional government instructed us to build the bridge by the end of March,” said Thet Lin.
Under the supervision of the Yangon Region Government Committee, the stake-driving ceremony for Myaynigone overpass was held on September 6 last year.
If the bridge is finished by the end of March, it will be the first of the new overpasses to open.
However, some doubt that the overpass will be completed by the March deadline. Construction on each of the existing overpasses lasted about a year. Myaynigone overpass is much longer than the old overpasses, so completing it in just six months would be an unprecedented feat.
Capital Development Co was contracted to build Myaynigone overpass at an expected cost of about Ks 17 billion.
In an effort to reduce traffic jams in Yangon, the regional government has built overpasses at Hledan, Shwegondaing and Bayintnaung junctions. These overpasses have not solved the city’s traffic problems.
Traffic jams have been particularly severe near Myaynigone junction due to the construction of the overpass.
Myaynigone overpass will be a 2,310-foot long, four-lane concrete road. Capital Development Co imported many of the construction materials from Japan.
