Bangkok Dusit Medical Services partners Nagoya university to boost staff standards

Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (BDMS), Thailand's largest medical-service operator under the name of Bangkok Hospital Group, has formed a partnership with Nagoya University in Japan to help raise the standards of Thai medical staff.

According to a memorandum of understanding, they will collaborate on educational, scientific and medical-treatment activities.

Dr Chatree Duangnet, BDMS executive vice president and chief operating officer for medical affairs, said that since Thailand aims to become an international medical hub, hospitals and their staff must improve their knowledge and ability to cater to growing patient needs.

He noted that Thailand already had achieved some status as a medical hub, and this collaboration would help elevate the standard of Thai medical services.

BDMS and Nagoya University will jointly offer an exchange programme for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and technicians to enhance their knowledge of international medical services. Research and patient referrals are also part of this collaboration.

"Japan is a technologically advanced country, including in medical technology. Having a chance to exchange knowledge with experts from Nagoya University is a good opportunity to improve the quality of Thai medical staff, so they can offer international-standard services and promote Thailand as an international medical hub now and in the future," he said.

Dr Michinari Hamaguchi, president of Nagoya University, said the institution offered some of the most complete programmes available.

"Today, knowledge is abundant. Nagoya University’s role, as a leading educational institute in Japan, is to never stop learning. We must always step forward to open up to new experiences in order to allow scientific and technological advancement, for example through this important collaboration with Bangkok Hospital," Hamaguchi said.

Healthcare for their staff is a big issue for foreign companies operating in Thailand, and BDMS hopes this agreement with Nagoya University will assure such firms that they will get good treatment at Bangkok Hospital.

Meanwhile, Nagoya University will designate Bangkok Hospital as the healthcare provider for its students and staff in Thailand and neighbouring countries. Nagoya University Hospital will also recommend the hospital chain to its patients moving or travelling to Thailand or nearby nations, and Bangkok Hospital will recommend Nagoya University Hospital to its patients heading to Nagoya or its surrounding area.
