E-visa system gains popularity
The number of foreigners using visas on arrival has been declining after the introduction of e-visa system, according to an Immigration Department official.
Launched on September 1 for visitors from over 100 countries, the e-visa system has effectively led to a shorter line at the visa-on-arrival counters.
The official said that before the launch, over 10,000 visitors queued up at the Yangon International Airport for the visa-on-arrival on a monthly basis.
“Since the introduction of e-visa system, the number of visitors using visas on arrival has declined. The reason is the e-visa system is more convenient for international visitors,” said the official.
The US tops the list of visitors seeking e-visas, followed by UK, according to the department.
Those with e-visas can enter Myanmar through three gateways – Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay.
