New education bill due before Thingyan

New education bill due before Thingyan

The national education amendment bill is expected to be finalised for endorsement before the Thingyan water festival that runs from April 13 to 16, Saw Hla Tun, the secretary of the Lower House's Bill Committee, said.

The bill has now come to the Lower House’s Bill Committee after the Upper House discussed and approved it.
“The Lower House is to discuss and approve the bill on April 8 and after that it will be sent back to the Upper House. The Upper House will discuss the bill for further approval on April 8 and 9. Then it will be submitted to the president. If the Upper House passes it, it will be sent to the Union Parliament. The whole process will be finalised before April 10,” Saw Hla Tun said.
“We will have to take into consideration the interests of the state and the citizens regardless of the ministry, Parliament, NNER [National Network for Educational Reform] and students,” Saw Hla Tun said.
The bill committee agreed on 57 points in the bill, Saw Hla Tun added.
The NNER issued a statement on April 1 mentioning that the amendments of the Upper House went against the demands of the activists and the agreed points of the four-party talks held earlier this year.
