Executions by Indonesia are shameful

Executions by Indonesia are shameful

In Bangkok, the Thai government showed compassion for the suffering of the Nepalese people with the promise of $100 million in aid, and the despatch of soldiers, medical officers and supplies to assist the quake-ravaged country.

In Jakarta, the Indonesian government showed a total lack of compassion as it judicially murdered eight drug smugglers by firing squad.

In carrying through with the executions the Indonesian President, Joko Widodo snubbed his nose at the international community and ignored pleas for clemency from the leaders of the nations whose citizens were to be executed.
Worse than that, in three of the cases he showed utter contempt for the rule of law. The two Australians who were executed still had appeals outstanding within the Indonesian legal system. Further, serious allegations of bribery and corrupt judicial proceedings by the trial judges are yet to be investigated. In the case of the Brazilian who was executed, he has been diagnosed with serious mental disorders and in any civilised country would have been deemed unfit to have stood trial, let alone be executed by firing squad.
Even proponents of capital punishment should have cause for concern in these three cases.
Shame on you President Widodo.
