Death camps: US prepared to assist with forensic investigation

The United States is prepared to assist Malaysian police with the forensic investigation into the mass graves and death camps in Perlis.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is on an official visit to the United States was informed of this during his meeting with Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Charles Johnson to discuss the two-way cooperation between both countries on security issues.

“Some of the other things discussed were Malaysia’s development in fulfilling statutory requirements on the US Visa waiver programme, a cross-border cooperation unit on criminal investigations, human trafficking, steps taken by Malaysia to address the Islamic State fighters via the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) and Special Measures Against Terrorism in Foreign Countries (Amata) 2015,” said a press statement from the Home Ministry on Friday.

On Monday, Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar announced the discovery of 139 graves and 28 transit camps used to house victims of human trafficking, between Kampung Wai in Kuala Perlis and Tangga 100 at Felcra Lubuk Sireh.

During his trip, Dr Ahmad Zahid also visited the US Coast Guard, an agency under the Department of Homeland Security, responsible for maritime security including cargo.

“The ministry had a discussion with the US Coast Guard and they said they are willing to share their expertise with the police and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency by inviting them to attend a training session on solving human trafficking issues.”

The Home Minister will be attending a United Nations Security Council session on foreign terrorist fighters in New York on Friday.

Malaysian Ambassador to the United States, Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin and Home Ministry deputy chief secretary Datuk Seri Adenan Ab Rahim are also part of the delegation in the United States.
