Thai challenge ends in Bangkok

No Thai survived after second-round action in the US$25,000 Chang ITF Women's Circuit at Bangkok's Rama Garden Sports Complex yesterday.

The disappointing day for Thailand began with the unexpected exit of rising star Nicha Lertpitaksinchai to Zhang Ling of Hong Kong, 1-6 1-6. Then unfancied Patcharin Cheapchandej appeared to be on an upset mission before Chinese second seed Zhang Kai Lin prevailed in three sets 2-6 6-3 6-1. Nudnida Luangnam, the Thai No 4, fought back from 1-3 in the second set in her match against Chinese lefthander Han Xinyuan but then sprained her left ankle and succumbed to defeat. Elsewhere in the second round, two Japanese players advanced to the quarter-finals following wins over compatriots. Fourth seeded Junri Namigata beat Akiko Omae 6-2 7-5 while Erika Sema moved past Kanae Hisami 7-5 6-1.
