Washington delivering final blows to US-Thai friendship

Washington delivering final blows to US-Thai friendship

Re: "US political posturing kills Thai-US relations", Regional Perspective, July 20.

I agree with Kavi Chongkittavorn that the US government’s strong condemnation of Thailand’s decision to deport Uighur immigrants has considerably worsened our relations. Cordial diplomatic relations between the two countries might never be revived.
What a tragedy it is that a longstanding friendship should be ruined by the Obama administration’s penchant for issuing self-serving reprimands to Thailand over issues such as “democracy” and “human rights”.
No country in the world is beyond condemnation: How many thousands (or millions) of innocent people have been killed since the US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq? The US claimed that its intention in invading these two countries was to bring them freedom and democracy. How successful has it been?
The US government should change its stance towards Thailand. Thailand has done its best to remain America’s good friend. However, as the old song goes, “It takes two to tango.”
Asia is fast becoming the world’s centre of power, both economically and militarily. Will the US be the last country to notice the change?
