G-SPOT hits the spot

G-SPOT hits the spot

The party organiser lifts the spirits of Bangkok's gay community with selected events every week at upmarket venues

LONG BEHIND other world capitals in throwing great parties for the gay community, G Spot entertainment stepped in to fill the Bangkok void last year with four extravagant gay nights at different venues all over town almost every week.
To be fair, it wasn’t that no one had made an effort prior to 2014. Several party promoters had tried to liven up the scene for Bangkok’s gay partygoers (and their gay-friendly friends) and give them more options than DJ Station and Silom 2. However, these dodgy theme parties came across as neither classy nor fun and all too many were really no different from other club night parties except for the addition of a very brief drag show.
Started just last year, |G-Spot’s parties quickly become popular among gay and non-gay patrons, thanks to the organiser’s adamant mission to offer fun, creativity, craziness and value for money.
“What is Bangkok’s gay nightlife scene? It’s Silom Soi 2, right? That’s what most people think about. Silom Soi 2 is fun. It’s established and it’s well known, but it’s not enough to create a scene.
It’s just one spot that is getting more and more mundane. Especially for those of us who like to go out. That’s why we thought about having parties in our own way, initially for our friends,” G-Spot’s Kreangsak “Ken” Leing tells XP.
Manning his PR agency by day, Ken and two of his pals rock the gay scene at least once a week at several different venues in Bangkok including Maggie Choo’s, Double Tree by Hilton, Penthouse at Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok and Mango Tree on the River.
“It wasn’t easy at first, though you would think gay people would swarm the party once they heard about us,” Ken admits. “It takes time for people to realise we’re not like others. We don’t sell sex, we don’t encourage people to come and just get drunk and we set out to offer something different, and different is not easy.”
With high-quality production, creativity and a crazy fun vibe in mind, the team managed to diversify their gay nights to four editions, each with its own characters.
“Gay people like a good time – that we can offer – but let’s not forget that they get bored very easily. If you repeat yourself, you don’t sell anymore. That’s why we put a lot of thought in the produc-tions, and we try to create something different so they come back again and again.”
G Spot is mostly known for its weekly gay night at Maggie Choo’s on Silom Road, where every Sunday, patrons flock to the venue early to secure a table or a “standing spot”. Taking on the character of the venue, the party oozes sophisticated flair, refined electronic music and classy acts.
Every last Friday of the month is TGIF Party at the Penthouse of Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok where every edition has a different theme. Guests are encouraged to dress up and winning costumes walk away with sumptuous prizes.
Every first Saturday of the month is a good time to don your bikini and join the fun crowd at Splash Out Pool Party at Double Tree by Hilton on Sukhumvit Soi 26, where drinks, fun and games flow from afternoon through to late.
The newest kid in the repertoire is a monthly rave |at Mango Tree on the River where guests are welcomed early to enjoy the sunset and lured to the dancefloor later |at night.
Pangina Heals, the scene’s most prominent drag artist |and entertainer, puts on a drag show at every party.
“We have started something here that will definitely become the beginning of something bigger and more substantial.” Ken enthuses.
“From our humble start to the decent success we’ve achieved, we hope that one day soon Bangkok will have a real gay night scene and maybe, who knows, we could have one awesome gay pride!”

G Spot Night Party is tomorrow at Mango Tree on the River, Yodpiman River Walk, from 6pm onwards. Entry is free with three hours of selected free flow drinks.
