Big C to open fresh food distribution centre

Big C to open fresh food distribution centre

BIG C Supercenter has spent over Bt1.7 billion to complete its logistics and supply chain system by opening a fresh food distribution centre in April at a strategic location in Lat Krabang.

Located on a 106-rai site, the warehouse will supply 506 stores in various formats around the country. It will be able to serve up to 700 stores totally.
A Bt1.3 billion distribution centre was opened last year in Pathum Thani’s Thanyaburi district to serve the expansion of Mini Big C convenience stores.
Warunee Kitjaroenpoonsin, director of corporate affairs, said yesterday that the new distribution centre is equipped with advanced technologies that reduce internal expenses and shrinkage loss while ensuring the long-lasting freshness of products every day.
It is better for suppliers and the environment while also creating jobs for citizens nearby.

28.8m cases a year
It can handle over 28.8 million cases of frozen and chilled foods a year, representing an increase of 80 per cent over the three fresh food distribution centres in Ayutthaya that have been already shut down.
The new centre consolidates all distribution and logistics operations, comprising a non-food distribution centre for Big C hypermarkets (Big C Supercenter and Big C Extra) located in Ayutthaya’s Wang Noi, the non-food distribution centre for Mini Big C in Thanyaburi, a cross-docking distribution centre in Samut Prakan’s Bang Pli and the newest distribution centre serving fresh foods to all Big C formats.
Although the economy slowed down in the first half and hasn’t shown any signs of improving this half, fresh foods remain a daily necessity for consumers, so the company expects sales growth in fresh food products throughout the year.
In the first half, Big C enjoyed sales growth of 3 per cent from the same half last year.
Lat Krabang is closer to most manufacturers so it helps reduce truck journeys while the main roads such as Suwintawong Road, East Wing Road or the Bangkok-Chon Buri Motorway make the daily distribution of fresh food products go efficiently to 506 Big C stores nationwide.
About 600,000 cases of fresh food products are distributed per week.
The new distribution centre can reduce energy consumption by 40 per cent through advanced design and systems such as an automatic lighting system that switches off lights when not in use, a system that uses ammonia instead of freon coolant that could harm the environment, centralised air-conditioning with a more efficient evaporator and a low loss electric transformer.
