SCG awards scholarships to 150 Cambodian high-school students

SCG, one of the leading conglomerates in Asean, has awarded scholarships to 150 Cambodian high-school students from Phnom Penh and Kampot provinces under its "SCG Sharing the Dream" programme to allow the students to attain higher education.

During a ceremony at the Royal University of Phnom Penh’s CKCC auditorium, scholarships of US$200 (Bt7,200), plus school supplies, were awarded to 150 students who finished their secondary education at more than 50 high schools in Phnom Penh and Kampot.
To qualify for the scholarships, the students had to show a strong motivation to continue their education, gratitude to their parents and a proactive contribution to their community. Students also had to submit a two-page essay on the subject: “I am a good person and am good to others”.
SCG received hundreds of applications from students at more than 50 participating schools for the 150 scholarships on offer for the second time in Cambodia.
With the formation of the Asean Economic Community in 2015, which will create a bloc where goods, services and labour can move freely between member countries, SCG sees education as a key factor in the future success of Asean nations in a more liberalised and competitive economic environment.
“At SCG, we believe that education is the key for sustainable growth, especially for Asean,” said Aree Chavalitcheerwingul, vice president of regional business SCG Cement-Building Materials.
“This has led our organisation to develop the ‘SCG Sharing the Dream’ programme, an educational assistance initiative for students in Asean: Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. That’s why the programme is a reflection of SCG’s commitment to be a good corporate citizen where it operates; as well as to continue supporting students to obtain higher education,” he said.
“I am proud that SCG can be a part of the society that helps children to reach for their dreams. These children will be empowered to influence and make an impact in the development of our communities, and of the country.”
“SCG Sharing the Dream” is an Asean-wide sustainable development initiative from SCG that has granted scholarships to more than 5,000 students in Asean. With its vision of becoming a sustainable business leader in Asean and a role model for good corporate management and suitable development, SCG will run this programmes on an annual basis and will develop other programmes that create a better quality of life for the Cambodian community.
At the ceremony, the scholarships were awarded by Hang Chuon Naron, Cambodia’s minister of Education, Youth and Sport, Nuttavudh Photisaro, Thai ambassador to Cambodia, and Aree.
