Myanmar's ruling party include trishaw drivers in campaign

The Union Solidarity and Development Party has begun paying trishaw drivers Ks 5,000 each per month to raise USDP flags on the handlebars of their vehicles.

The Union Election Commission allowed political parties to campaign for 60 days leading up to the election on November 8.
One trishaw driver in Tharketa Township, Yangon, said: “They told us to raise USDP flags. If we do that, we will be given Ks 5,000. Some did it, but many have refused.”
He continued: “We were offered Ks 15,000 or Ks 20,000 to attach vinyl USDP stickers. However, nobody has done that.”
According to Maung Maung Aye, a driver who raised the USDP flag on his trishaw, drivers have to give their personal information, including their name, national identity card number, address and trishaw registration number, to the USDP office before they receive any payment.
Maung Maung Aye said: “The officers from the USDP came to me and said they want to raise their flag on my trishaw. Then they gave me the money.”
The USDP officers did not discuss voting with the trishaw drivers, he added.
