President warns of chaos if USDP loses

Ngapudaw - Communism or civil war would be result of rapid change, said President Thein Sein told Oatshipkwin village, Ngapudaw, where he grew up in Ayeyawady Region.

“Our government is transforming an old system to a new one. It is very dangerous to transform a system. There have been many Arab and Muslim countries they have transformed their political system like us. They have not changed to democracy and you all have seen the scenes of bloodshed on TV. Hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing. They tried to change into democracies at the same time as us. We are changing into a democracy with a step-by-step approach cautiously to prevent bloodshed. People said it was time to change and we have changed. So we need to make democracy survive. We have changed from dictatorship to democracy. So what kind of system do you want? There is nothing left except communism. Do you want communism?” asked the president.

The government had already made changes and it only needed to stabilise the reforms, he said.

“People from Kyaunggon, my wife’s native area, are poorly educated. They flee all the time and have been troubled by communists. The end of the rebellion in the delta was recent. Young people do not know about it. The changes to democracy are popular. We will make political, economic, administrative and social reforms,” said the president.

USDP members welcomed the president, union minister Ohn Myint, who is the Kyauktan candidate, and President’s Office minister Thein Nyunt, Maubin candidate.

Onlookers wore party T-shirts and held up the president’s photo to welcome the president back to his hometown of Ngapudaw.

It is his third visit time to the Ayeyawady Region in three months. He visited 18 times in 2013 and 31 in 2014.

The president’s many recent speeches or trips have been criticised as an attempt to bolster USDP support ahead of the November 8 election, rather than just to boost region development and assess flood-affected areas, as has been claimed.
