Suu Kyi party wins historic poll majority: official results

Yangon - The National League for Democracy party, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, wins enough seats to be able to choose Myanmar's next president, according to official results.

The opposition party won at least two more seats across both houses of parliament in Sunday's landmark general election, the Union Election Commission said, passing the majority threshold of 329.

The NLD's landslide victory means they can nominate two out of three candidates for the top post of president, even though Suu Kyi is barred from holding the post.

The latest total - announced exactly five years after Suu Kyi was last released from house arrest - means that the NLD has enough votes to ensure that their preferred nominee becomes president.
