Publish ‘Mein Kampf’ and watch its demonic mystique shrivel

Stephff clearly thinks that Hitler’s treatise “Mein Kampf” was inspired by the devil (Stephff’s Cartoon, January 6). But I wonder if the cartoonist has ever read it. Although Hitler moans on and on about the perils of Judaism and communism, the text is in

Benito Mussolini succinctly summed up “Mein Kampf” – written 10 years before the Nazis came to power – when he commented that it was the most boring book he had ever read and added that Hitler’s beliefs were little more than commonplace cliches. It is true that Hitler, later as fuhrer, made a fortune through sales of his tome in the Third Reich. One wonders just how many Germans proudly displaying copies in their bookshelves actually bothered to turn the pages.
By all means let “Mein Kampf” be published in 2016. It is certainly the best way to destroy both its demonic reputation and the absurd claim that it holds some sort of secret for converting us all to fascist ideology.
