Borrowed generators to fill dry-season power shortfall

Borrowed generators to fill dry-season power shortfall

Yangon - The natural gas generators will be borrowed from the US-based APR Company and a Singaporean firm to supply electricity needed during the dry season, said Htain Lwin, the managing director of the Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise at the Ministry o

“The natural gas generators have been borrowed and are expected to produce nearly 200 megawatts. The installation will be finished in April. They are to be installed in Kyaukphyu, Myingyan and Kyaukse where natural gas reserves are found,” Htain Lwin told the Daily Eleven.

All the untapped resources should be utilised to produce more electricity since 7.47 million households still lacked electricity, according to Khin Maung Soe, the minister for electric power.

New hydro- and gas-powered plants produced more than 1,777 megawatts of electricity in 2015.

Households using electricity have increased from 2.2 million to 3.4 million in the year.

Myanmar has received loans from the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency to supply electricity to 0.23 million households in the next five years.
