Architect turned furniture designer Piboon Amornjiraporn brings sleek modernity to the home

SIMPLE, SLEEK and decidedly modern, award-wining brand Plural Designs has been delighting house owners over the last couple of years with furniture and home decor accessories that bring a touch of class to any room.
Established in 2013 by veteran architect Piboon Amornjiraporn, Plural Designs focuses on smart designs that are as attractive as they are functional.
“After designing homes and commercial areas for several years, I wanted to use my creativity to produce wood and metal works that would look good in any home. I started by studying woodwork with the carpenters at my cousin’s factory then went on to explore new materials,” Piboon explains.
His work became known to the public after he landed the 2014 DEmark Award for his Masonry Storage System. Crafted from oak and steel, the “condominium”-like system can be assembled in different ways to best accommodate available space and can serve as a display shelf, TV cabinet and bookshelf.
“I use mainly imported oak because it’s beautiful,” Piboon says.
Last year, his collection of Line chairs made from steel won trophies at Thailand’s DEmark Award and Japan’s Good Design Award. They’re available in pastel blue and black and feature an ergonomic curved seat for extra comfort.
Last week, Plural took part in the Thailand International Furniture Fair and introduced a new collection of Gestalt stools, coffee tables and vases produced with the collaboration of the Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand.
Playful and unique, the pieces are fashioned from oak and metal and are so beautifully made that they could be mistaken for sculptures. There’s a Petal lantern and kratong-like tray made from glossy aluminium, as well as a six-seat, glass-topped oak dining set, a hanging bookshelf and lounge chairs covered with hand-woven fabric from the Round collection.
“I joined a design workshop organised by the Support Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand and the British Council. We’re now planning a collection of furniture that blends wood with tie-dyed textiles,” Piboon says.
The Kidd line goes back to nature with a wall clock resembling the sun, tree-shaped hangers and shelves in the shape of a house, cloud and mountain. All are made with steel and come in pastel blue and basic black.
The Weave steel lamps are adorned with solid teak and available in rose gold, gold and black metallic.
