The new Joox music app will have you listening to your favourite tunes around the clock

MUSIC FANS will have plenty to listen to this Songkran if they download the free app known as Joox, thus gaining access to more than 3.5 million songs from some 100 music labels.
Developed by Tencent Holding, Joox– the name is inspired by Juke Box – has been available for download in Thailand since November and was officially launched in the middle of January.
The app is bursting with features and I was delighted to find that I could listen to classic cuts from artists and bands whose work is no longer played on the radio, They include progressive rockers Pink Floyd, heavy metal band Korn and hard rock outfit Deep Purple. Just as an example: the Joox database has 52 Deep Purple albums, several of them live recordings, and 25 by Pink Floyd.
There are two types of Joox services – free and VIP. You can get VIP access by joining certain activities to promote the app or you can buy access for Bt100 a month or Bt1,000 a year.
The VIP access is the better option as it means you don’t have to listen to audio advertisements and you can also access songs released on the Universal Music and Warner Music labels, which are not available on the free service.
The app is intuitive to use. There is also a search function that allows you to locate your favourite songs, artists or albums quickly.
It’s divided into three main sections with access buttons located in the top right corner. The three sections are Discover page, My Music page and the JOOX radio page.
Discover is the app’s main page and provides access to new releases and new content. Here you can find music charts for Thai and international songs, song suggestions and new playlists, as well as the search function.
The playlists, which are compiled by the Joox team, are useful, as they provides access to songs by category, such as Thai pop, international, “best of”, Thai indie, jazz, K-pop, pop, rock, and alternative.
Joox also allows you to listen to songs you have downloaded offline through its My Music page. You’ll find a list of the songs you have copied to your smartphone here too as well as the favourites you selected at the Discover page.
Personal playlists are easily created using the “Add to Favourites” though you do have to be online to listen.
The Radio page shows several radio stations that offer variety of songs selected by Joox music experts. You can browse the stations by topic, including Recent, Hits, Decades, Genre, Mood, Theme, Rewind and |Luk Thung.
And you can even say it in song thanks to the new LyricsCard feature, which allows you to select up to five parts of a song’s lyrics to share on Facebook and WeChat.
