Subic customs seizes 15,000 sacks of Thai rice

The Philippine Bureau of Customs (BOC) recently seized 15,600 sacks of rice that were shipped from Thailand without the necessary import permit from the National Food Authority (NFA). The sacks of Thai white tice were inside 30 container vans that were seized on April 15, said lawyer Ernelito Aquino, district collector of the Port of Subic.
Aquino said the shipments arrived at the port on April 5, and were |consigned to the Freight Connection Phils Inc.
“The importation … without any import permit validly issued by the NFA is a clear violation of the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines,” Aquino said.
The shipments, worth at least 23 million pesos (Bt27 million), arrived on board MV Moni Rickmers, he said.
He said Marie Ann Dela Cruz, general manager of Freight Connection Phils, told him that the company was not aware of the shipment.
The seized shipments were turned over to the BOC’s enforcement and security service and stored pending auction by the government. |– Philippine Daily Inquirer

Weather drives up
durian prices
Durian prices in Malaysia are expected to increase by between 20 and 30 per cent this year because of unfavourable weather conditions.
The supply of durians is also expected to run low.
Bao Sheng Durian Farm owner Chang Zhi Vooi said prices might see a rise of between 5 and 20 ringgit (Bt45-Bt180) for all types of durian.
“The factors that will affect the prices are the durian trees’ age and the fruits’ freshness.
“The older the durian tree is, the dearer its fruits will be,” he said, adding that prices for the fruits that were freshly dropped from the trees were higher that for the older ones.
He said customers visiting his orchard in Balik Pulau, Penang, usually opted for durians that had just dropped from the trees. – The Star
