Phassawit and Wishaya stun rivals in rain lashed Hua Hin

Two local wildcards Phassawit Burapharitta and Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul upset higher ranked opponents in the rain interrupted US$10,000 ITF Thailand Men’s Pro Circuit at the True Arena Hua Hin on Monday.

World University Games national player Phassawit came back from a break down in the final set to upset world No 580 Sidharth Rawat of India 6-2 4-6 6-4 in two hours and 26 minฌutes while Wishaya stunned world No 633 Bowen Quyang of China 5-7 6-2 7-6 (7-4).
Phassawit, a post graduate student at Sripathum University, fought back from 13 down in the final set to reduce the gap at 3-4 before rain suspended play. The Thai admitted he was exhausted and decided to take risks. When play resumed, he took three straight games and prevailed.
“We played more than two hours and I was really tired even though I got some rest during the rain break. So I went for my shots and gave him only two points after the rain,” said Phassawit, who is playing his first ITF Men’s Futures this year. He next faces Japanese Issei Okamura, who upset Indian fifth seed N Vijay Sundar Prashanth 6-2 4-6 6-4.
The 21yearold Wishaya, a former national Davis Cup player, roared back after making two silly mistakes that cost him the first set to settle score with the Chinese rival who beat him twice in 2013 and 2014 in Futures events in China and Cambodia respectively.
“I tried to focus on my serves as it was not easy to play under windy conditions. I missed two shots on my serves at five all and he took that opportunity in the first set,” said Wishaya.
“I didn’t change my plan much in the second set but he started to miss easily. In the tiebreak, I was a bit lucky to break him for two points. Playing at home with support from my family really helped,” added Wsihaya who will play either seventh seed Yeconq He or Aoxiong Wang of China on Wednesday.
Another Thai wildcard entrant Jirat Navasirisomboon did not enjoy the same luck as he lost to sixth seed Lee Kuanyi of Taiwan 64 63. Thai No 1 Pol Wattanakul, formerly known as Puriwat Chatpatcharoen, went down to Chinese Fajing Sun 63 36 63.
