UNSG to attend 21st Century Panglong Conference

NAY PYI TAW - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will attend the Union Peace Conference, also known as the 21st Century Panglong Conference, which will take place in Naypyitaw on August 31.

Zaw Htay, the deputy director-general of the Myanmar President’s Office, has confirmed that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will attend the Union Peace Conference, also known as the 21st Century Panglong Conference, later this month.

“We have invited the UN secretary-general and have already received a reply that he will attend the opening ceremony. We have invited diplomats as usual. So far, [the Secretary-General] is the highest-ranking diplomat,” he added.

More than 1,500 guests have been invited to the opening of the conference, which will take place in Naypyitaw on August 31.

Hla Maung Shwe, secretary of the Preparation Committee for the 21st Century Panglong Conference, said: “We are preparing to invite around 1,800 guests from embassies, CSOs, youth organisations and other organisations.”

On August 16, the Union Peace Dialogue Joint Committee decided to invite 200 people from ethnic armed groups.

Participants have agreed to discuss five main topics—political affairs, security, social affairs, the economy and the natural environment and resources—at the first meeting, said Zaw Htay on August 15.

Representatives from the government, parliaments, Tatmadaw (Myanmar Defence Services), ethnic armed groups and political parties discussed political affairs, the economy, social affairs, security, land and natural environment policies at the last Union Peace Conference held by the previous government.
