Unlike Christianity, Islam was born of the sword

Unlike Christianity, Islam was born of the sword

William Page’s academic lessons in theology are quite irrelevant to the reality in which the world is immersed (“What is of highest value in the Koran”, Letters, yesterday). The whole planet is under threat from a totalitarian ideology intent on imposing

All three of the Abrahamic religions were spawned in the Middle East by people controlled by superstition and with restricted worldly knowledge. It was and continues to be an area of continuous tribal conflict, hatred and violence. Jesus would seem to have been an exception with his preaching of love and peace – and we know how he met his ignoble end. But Islam is quite different. It was born of the sword. That is how it expanded and continues to do so, as history and current events show. There is far more to Islam than the Koran. Islamic fundamentalists are inspired by the lifestyle of their prophet, to the point that, as he did, they claim to act in the name of their god. They blatantly declare their goal of displacing democratically established laws with those of their prophet because his laws are the totalitarian laws of their god.
In the last century the world faced, confronted and defeated totalitarianism on two fronts. In the interests of human development, it must ditch political correctness and treat this current growing menace with the same commitment.
