Creating chic jewellery with a silky design

Creating chic jewellery with a silky design

WITH A PASSION for Thai silk and a background in jewellery design, Supatchana Limwongsee set up Ornaments & L’or Handicraft Studio two years ago to produce and sell jewellery made from brass and local silk with creative, colourful and fashionable designs.

Supatchana, a 29-year-old jewellery designer who is the owner and design director of Ornaments & L’or Handicraft Studio, said that after having the opportunity to meet with a Thai silk producer in Nakhon Ratchasima, she had the idea to combine what she knew about jewellery design with Thai silk and turn the result into fashionable ornamental jewellery.
The decision has proved a fruitful one, with her products – including earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces and pins – sold at ornament and jewellery stores, and shown at international trade fairs, including the recent “58th Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair”.
Supatchana, who graduated from Srinakharinwirot University with a major in Jewellery Design Visual }|Art, decided to set up the business with an initial budget of about Bt100,000.
She makes each piece from Thai silk and brass by herself, with sales made through major retail outlets.
So far, most of her customers are foreigners who like the Thai silk and jewellery combination of her designs, which she said were good for the “mix and match” market.
Her Ornaments & L’or Handcraft Studio designs are now sold at the ROOM concept store in three upmarket shopping outlets in Bangkok: Siam Discovery, Central Embassy and Emquartier.
By incorporating silk into her jewellery design, the brand creates added value for the Thai silk sector, expanding it from a fabric into chic ornaments and ornamental jewllery with a modern appearance, she said, adding that this was what made the brand appealing to both Thais and foreigners.
Prices start from Bt590 for a pair of earrings to Bt6,000 for a beautiful necklace.
Supatchana, who currently has a range of about 50 design items, now plans to introduce her products at more international trade fairs and fashion weeks, such as New York Fashion Week and Vienna Fashion Week.
