Dell outlines its vision after acquisition of EMC Corp

Client Infrastructure solutions handled under separate units as company aims to herald ‘next industrial revolution’

DELL TECHNOLOGIES, a new company formed from the merger of computer-technology company Dell Inc and data-storage specialist EMC Corporation, says it plans to be the trusted provider of a central infrastructure for the next industrial revolution.
In a conference call with media and industry analysts last week, Dell Technologies announced completion of its acquisition of EMC Corp, creating a family of businesses that provides the essential infrastructure for organisations to build their digital future, transform information technology and protect their most important asset, information.
This merger creates a US$74-billion (Bt2.58 trillion) enterprise with an expansive technology portfolio that solves complex problems for customers in the industry’s fast-growing areas of hybrid cloud, software-defined data centres, converged infrastructure, platform-as-a-service, data analytics, mobility and cybersecurity, the firm says.
Michael Dell, chairman and chief executive of Dell Technologies, said that together with customers, Dell would move beyond automated industrial processes to an automated complex path by creating a new system of engagement and insight. Virtual reality and other aspects will redefine work, learning, and play with a whole new way of moving and doing businesses. Its special intelligent machine learning will amplify human creativity, he said.
“At Dell Technologies, we have the vision, the innovation, the market position, and the horsepower for our customers to dream that big,” Dell said.
After the acquisition, most of Dell’s best-known businesses including client solutions will continue to be known simply as Dell, while the infrastructure solutions business will be known as Dell EMC.
The rest of the Dell family – Pivotal, RSA, SecureWorks, Virtustream and Vmware – will keep their independence and retain their freedom to develop their own ecosystems.
Michael Dell said the commitment to provide openness and customer choices were fundamental principles at Dell Technologies, “and I believe of any successful technology companies”.
He added that it made sense to deliver integrated solutions in such areas as hybrid cloud and security.
“We also want to be No 1,” he said.
Dell has leading positions in personal computers, servers, storage devices, virtualisation and security, converged and hyper-converged infrastructure and platform-as-a-service. It holds more than 20,000 patents and applications pending.
“Importantly, we’re also privately controlled. We don’t have to cater to the short-term thinking that exists in the market. We can think in decades,” Dell said.
The company believes that it may be standing at the very beginning of the next industrial revolution, the next quantum leap of human progress. Digital transformation is real and it is radical beyond anything ever seen before.
“I’m not just thinking about digital transformation of business but the entire physical world. [With] the marginal cost of making something intelligent approaching zero, the number of intelligent objects and devices is growing exponentially,” Michael Dell said.
By 2031, the number of connected devices is expected to grow from 8 billion to 200 billion or more, about 25 times the number of people on the planet, and will create many new sources of information. That is the challenge and the opportunity, and this is why he created Dell Technologies to make those possibilities a reality.
“Dreaming big is always what Dell has been about. Thirty-two years ago, I was building PCs in my dorm room at the University of Texas. I believed passionately that IT represented a revolutionary advancement of human progress that would change the world for the better.
“And in the last three decades, we have seen technology driven deeper and further into the world than ever before. We see new industries, new business models, new ideas, and opportunities from every corner of the globe, and this is just [the] beginning. The real show is just getting started.
“Dell Technologies will stand at the very centre of the action as the largest enterprise system company in the world,” he said.
