Thailand clinch first ever taekwondo poomsae world championship

Thailand achieved a historic success by claiming its first ever title at the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Peru at the weekend.

The country’s maiden poomsae world championship came in the team event of junior female division as a trio of Penkanya Paisankiatikul, Ornawee Srisahakit and Kotchawan Chomchuen combined to finish ahead of Taiwan, with Vietnam and China claiming the bronze.

The three girls’ triumph followed the silver medal the country secured earlier in the event through Pongporn Suwittayarak and Kesara Kiatachawachai in the mixed pair competition.

Pimol Srivikorn, the Taekwondo Association of Thailand, said the trio’s achievement was a result of months of hard work.

“I’m very pleased and happy for all the athletes as well as the coaching staff, who devoted themselves in training for months until they achieved such a great success by clinching the gold medal for the country for the first time.”
