Russia clawing back influence after Cold War defeat

It didn’t take long for a Russian diplomatic apparatchik to trot out the usual formulaic Kremlin non-sequiturs that everyone is picking on them, and that they only bomb “terrorists” in someone else’s sovereign territory.
The real story here is Vladimir Putin’s reckless adventurism in Eastern Europe and the Middle East – a rather muscular attempt to regain Great Power status within the international community after the humiliation of a comprehensive Cold War defeat. No amount of indignant posturing will make up for that immutable fact.
