Caring for our ageing skin

Caring for our ageing skin

Despite the sales pitch of a host of cosmetics and treatments, ageing skin is inescapable.

Despite the sales pitch of a host of cosmetics and treatments, ageing skin is inescapable.
As we get older, our skin undergoes a number of changes. It becomes thinner, loses fat and no longer looks as plump and smooth as it once did.
Our veins and bones can be seen more easily and scratches, cuts or bumps can take longer to heal.
Years of exposure to the sun for lengthy periods may lead to age spots, melasma, dryness and wrinkles.
But there are a few things that can be done to protect ageing skin and make it feel and look better.
Because most skin changes are related to sun exposure, prevention is a lifelong process. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen that helps protect against two types of the sun’s ray, UVA and UVB, may prevent more age spots, melasma and even reduce the risk of wrinkles.
When you are outdoors, try to stay out of the sun in the middle of the day or wear protective clothing and a hat if necessary.
However, do not completely shun the sun because sunlight is the easiest and healthiest way to get vitamin D which is vital to our body. It plays an important role in electrolyte metabolism, protein synthesis, immunity nerve and muscle functioning and an array of other physiologic processes.
Daily exposure to early morning sunlight for 10 to 15 minutes without sunscreen is useful in preventing fractures in elderly people.
Good nutrition and adequate fluids are also helpful. Dehydration increases the risk of skin injury. Sometimes minor nutritional deficiency can cause rashes and other skin changes.
Try to keep skin moist with lotions and do not use soaps that are heavily perfumed. Also avoid taking hot baths which can make a dry skin problem worse.
The key to healthier skin is to find a balance with skin healthy habits.
