Hospitality firms expand to reap gains from growing tourism sector

ONYX HOSPITALITY Group is heading to Hong Kong while Akaryn Hotel Group is securing more properties in Thailand and Laos to take advantage of the growing tourism sector.

Onyx announced a partnership with Hong Kong property developer Tai Hung Fai Group, to manage the new Shama serviced-apartments property in North Point, Hong Kong.
Tommy Lai, vice president North Asia for Onyx, said the 121-keys hotel had 29 rooms on the second to fourth floors for short stays.
Ninety-two serviced apartments, on the fifth floor onwards, are in studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations for longer stays.
Due to open early next year, the new Shama Island North will also offer an in-house fitness centre, gym, a spacious lounge area, Shama Den and a roof terrace.
“As part of expansion plans within the North Asia region, our collaboration will continue to bring more serviced-apartment offerings to guests staying in Hong Kong,” Lai said.
Onyx currently manages 19 serviced-apartments complexes under the Shama brand across the Asia-Pacific region, including six in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, the Akaryn Hotel Group is increasing its portfolio of hotels and resorts to cash in on the growing tourism industry in the region, said Anchalika Kijkanakorn, founder and managing director.
Its latest project, Akyra Beach Club Phuket, is set to open on December 1, on Natai Beach in Phang-Nga province.
In the capital, Akyra Thonglor Bangkok is also due to launch in December.
The second urban property in the Akyra brand offers a chic metropolitan retreat. A refurbishment programme will start this month to transform the former hotel into a unique address in the heart of Bangkok, the company says.
Moreover, the group’s first foray beyond Thai borders, the President by Akaryn in Vientiane, Laos, is also opening for guests in time for the peak tourist season.
