Thai juniors make country proud at Worlds

Atthaya Thitikul of Ratchaburi won the overall trophy with an impressive score of 2overpar 290 as six Thais claimed titles in the 9th Singha World Junior Championships at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course on Sunday.

The 13-year-old, who teed off yesterday one stroke behind Harmie Nicole Constantino and Carl Jano Corpus of the Philippines, hit a 71 in the final round to emerge winner. Frimodt Gustav of Denmark and Aidrice Jose Chan of the Philippines came second, one shot behind the Thai.
“I’m happy to finally win an overall title after failing last year. I wish I could have finished on even par. I didn’t hit the driver well today. I had five birdies but two double bogeys on the 15th and ninth holes pushed me back,” said Atthaya, who teamed up with Phisitkhwan Poorapanaopa to win the girls team event with a total of 598.
Thai youngsters won six events in the tournament, which featured 115 competitors from 17 countries. Four events were completed on Saturday. Tanakit Rattanadilok na Phuket won the three day overall title with 8-overpar 224 while the girls under 12 title went to Phannarai Meesomus after an overall score of 6-over par 232. Poomrapee Kaewpiboon hit 20-over par 226 for the boys under 10 title and Chutimon Rujiranan dominated the girls under 10 category with 18-over par 234.
In other results, Aidric Jose Chan and Carl Jano Corpus of the Philippines lifted the boys team trophy following a combined 584 score. Thailand (Parathakorn Suyasri and Natthaphat Harnchokehchaikul) were second with 595.
In the boys under17, Aidric Jose Chan of the Philippines beat Frimodt Gustav of Denmark in a play-off after they were tied at 3overpar 291 in regulation.
Hayden Hopewell of Australia fired 16-over par 304 to win the boys under14 category while Harmie Nicole Constantino of the Philippines won the girls under 17 with 4-overpar 292 and Bernice Olivarezilas of the Philippines won the girls under 14 with 15-overpar 303.
