Luksika Upsets 5th Seed in Tokyo
Former champion Luksika Kumkhum upset fifth seed Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-4 6-3 for a quarter-final spot of the US$100,000 ITF Women’s Circuit in Tokyo on Thursday.
The world No 146 who lifted up the trophy here in 2014 and finished as runner-up last year used her double-fisted groundstrokes to stun the 89 th ranked opponent in one hour and 27 minutes.
The 23-year-old from CHanthaburi is now in her first ITF quarter-final after settling up as a finalist in Wuhan four months ago.
She will next face either top seed Zhang Shuai or China or Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus on Friday.
In the doubles second round Luksika and Nicha Lertpitaksinchai went down to fourth seed Jessica Moore of Australia and Varatchaya Wongteanchai 1-6 7-6 (7-4) 5-10.
