NBTC to assign numbers to keep up with IoT tech

NBTC to assign numbers to keep up with IoT tech

THE NATIONAL Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will assign specific numbers for the Internet of Things (IoT) services as part of the plan to cope with the trend of the technology.

IoT is a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical objects will be connected to the Internet and be able to identify with other devices.
The NBTC deputy secretary-general Korkij Danchaivichit said the NBTC office would revise the existing NBTC numbering regulations to promote the IoT and machine-to-machine communication (M2M) by assigning new groups of numbers.
The NBTC has a plan to lunch the regulations for the IoT services next year, he added.
The NBTC has studied the IoT numbering plan, based on the International Telecommunications Union standard, which could be between 10 digits and 15 digit numbers.
“We will regulate the number under the concept that will be a cheaper fee rate than the existing number fees in many categories,” he said.
Currently the NBTC charges Bt2 per number per month for mobile and fixed-line numbers, Bt10,000 per number per month for the four-digit numbers and Bt 100,000 per number per month for three-digit numbers.
The NBTC cited the research from GSMA, which found that IoT services will rapidly grow in a next few years, so the NBTC needs to assign numbers to them to avoid a shortage of numbers in the near future.
The GSMA represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, uniting nearly 800 operators with almost 300 companies.
