Germany, govt signs rail cooperation pact

THE THAI MINISTRY of Transport and the German Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure have signed a joint declaration of intent (JDI) on further cooperation in the development of railways.

The signing took place yesterday at the Thai ministry’s head office between Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith and German Ambassador Peter Pruegel.
With official ties between the two countries spanning more than 150 years, Thailand and Germany have a long history of cooperation in the fields of technology and knowledge-sharing.

Since 1995, Germany and Thailand have been collaborating in the construction of a mass-transport network in Bangkok, and German companies have trained more than 600 Thai engineers, preparing them for work in the local railway industry as well as in other Southeast Asian countries and beyond.
With the signing of the JDI, the two countries underlined their intention and determination to cooperate closely and exchange experience in the development and extension of their rail systems.
The JDI also means that the two countries will share best-practice policies as well as exchange and train railway experts, researchers and technicians, according to Arkhom’s ministry.
