Second seeds Nudnida Luangnam and Varunya Wongteanchai clinched the doubles title at the US$10,000 ITF Pro Circuit 5 with a 7-5 6-3 win against Japan’s Mai Hontama and Yukina Saigo at the True Arena in Hua Hin on Friday.

Twenty-nine-year-old Nudnida has now hoisted three doubles trophies in the resort town this year, two of them with Varunya and the other alongside China’s Zhang Yukun.

Thai hopes foundered in the singles semi-finals, however, as second seed Bunyawi Thamchaiwat’s bid to settle a score collapsed with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 loss to rising Cambodian star Andrea Ka. After an opening-round loss to Ka last week, the Thai teen led 5-1 in the first set yesterday before Ka, based in France and the US, unleashed her full gamut of shots to stamp her authority.

Cambodia’s most successful female player ever enters today’s final as the favourite against top seed Hsu Chieh-yu of Taiwan, who advanced by beating Japan’s Mai Hontama 7-5 7-5.
